The Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics has approved the 2025 budget performance reports for federal polytechnics and aims to enhance collaboration to overcome challenges in the sector.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education in Nigeria officially adopted the 2025 budget performance reports of federal polytechnics, using them as a foundation to enhance collaboration with these institutions. The committee emphasized the importance of working together to solve long-standing issues facing the polytechnic sector, which is crucial for the country's industrial and technological advancement. During a budget defense session at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, rectors and officials from various polytechnics participated, indicating the government’s commitment to engaging with educational stakeholders.
The Committee Chairman, Fuad Laguda, highlighted the vital role of polytechnics in fostering Nigeria's industrial and technological development, stating that these institutions are key to producing the crucial middle-level manpower needed for national growth. He called for increased investment in the polytechnic education system, noting that Nigeria's ambitions in technology cannot be realized without a robust and well-funded polytechnic framework. This perspective aligns with the broader goal of promoting vocational education and skill development in the country.
The adoption of the budget reports signifies a proactive step toward reforming and enhancing the effectiveness of polytechnic education in Nigeria. By prioritizing collaboration and investment, the government aims to address the systemic challenges that have historically plagued the polytechnic sector, paving the way for reforms that could yield significant dividends for Nigeria's economy and workforce in the future.
