"I want to show how cool people are." An exhibition by photographer Inta Ruka opened in Tallinn

Latvian photographer Inta Ruka's exhibition 'Places Called Home' showcases over 80 of her works, combining two series that depict the diverse experiences of people living in rural Latvia.

The exhibition 'Places Called Home' by Latvian photographer Inta Ruka, recently inaugurated in Tallinn, presents a unique collection that merges two series of her photographs: 'My Country Folk' and 'Amalijas Street 5a'. Spanning more than eight decades of life, the works reflect Ruka's journey from the 1980s to the early 2000s, shining a light on the lives and stories of the people she has encountered throughout her photography career.

In her presentation, Ruka emphasized her desire to showcase the diverse humanity she has witnessed, stating, 'I want to show... how cool people are.' She captures individuals across various backgrounds and life experiences, offering viewers a glimpse into the unique narratives that each person holds. The collection shines with authenticity and serves as a reminder of the richness of life in rural Latvia, encouraging a connection among viewers and the subjects of her work.

The realization of this exhibition was long-anticipated by the curatorial team at Tallinn's 'Fotografiskas', who had dreamed of showcasing Ruka's work since 2019. Their commitment to highlighting local artistic talent reflects a broader cultural appreciation and fosters a dialogue around identity and community, providing an invaluable platform for the exploration of photography as a storytelling medium in the Baltic region.
