Kangasniemi does not want to dispute with the Finnish housing fair, the municipality changes the name of its abandoned houses campaign
Kangasniemi municipality has decided to rename its campaign showcasing abandoned houses following a request from the Finnish housing fair to avoid brand confusion.
The Kangasniemi municipality has made the decision to modify the name of its campaign originally titled 'Autiotalojen asuntomessut', which translates to 'Abandoned Houses Housing Fair'. This decision was reached by the municipal council with a close vote of 4-3, reflecting some contention on the issue. The Finnish housing fair, which felt that the name created confusion with its brand, requested Kangasniemi to change the campaign's title. Although the term 'asuntomessut' has not been registered as a trademark, Kainulainen, the municipality's mayor, stated that they had received permission from the Patent and Registration Office to use the term in their original title. The new name chosen is 'Autiotalojen Messut', or 'Abandoned Houses Fairs'. Mayor Kimmo Kainulainen emphasized that the council's discussion about the name change was thorough, indicating the importance of the issue for the local authorities. While the municipality believed they had solid legal grounds to maintain the use of the original term, they ultimately decided that pursuing a dispute with the Finnish housing fair was not practical in the grand scheme of things. This reflects a willingness by local officials to prioritize collaboration over confrontation when it comes to branding and community relations. This name change also highlights larger themes in local governance and the pressures municipalities face from larger organizations when it comes to community branding and marketing efforts. The hope is that the renamed campaign, while complying with the request of the Finnish housing fair, will still maintain the essence of the initiative in showcasing and promoting the historical value of abandoned houses in the area, thus preserving its intended purpose.
