Slovak PM to EU Council president on Druzhba pipeline: EU cannot prioritise Ukraine over Slovakia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico asserts that the European Union must not prioritize Ukraine's interests over those of Slovakia and Hungary during discussions about the Druzhba oil pipeline.
In a recent conversation with European Council President António Costa, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico articulated that the European Union should not place the needs of Ukraine above those of Slovakia or Hungary. This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the operations of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which runs through Ukrainian territory and has been a contentious issue in the context of EU energy policy. Fico’s strong stance highlights the delicate balance the EU must maintain between supporting Ukraine amidst the conflict with Russia and ensuring the energy security of its member states.
Fico expressed that he appreciates Costa dedicating substantial time to discussing the Druzhba pipeline, stressing the importance of restoring its operations. He criticized what he termed a "unilateral and harmful step" taken by the Ukrainian president, which aimed to halt oil transit through the pipeline. This development illustrates the ongoing tensions between the EU's member states regarding energy supplies and the geopolitical complexities surrounding the war in Ukraine.
The Slovak Prime Minister's remarks emphasize Slovakia's concerns over energy security and its reliance on oil imports from Ukraine, positioning the country at odds with EU policies that might prioritize support for Ukraine over its own economic needs. As discussions continue at the EU level, the balancing act between member states’ interests and collective support for Ukraine remains critical, particularly as Europe faces challenges in managing its energy resources and geopolitical strategy in the region.
