Slovak PM claims after call with Zelenskyy that Ukraine does not want to resume oil flows via Druzhba pipeline

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Ukraine is not interested in resuming oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline following discussions with President Zelenskyy, who raised security concerns regarding inspections.

In a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico reported that Ukraine has shown no interest in restarting the oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline. Fico's comments come as a part of a broader discussion regarding energy security and cooperation between Slovakia and Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict in the region. The Druzhba pipeline has been a crucial conduit for oil transport and any changes in its operation could significantly affect energy logistics in Europe.

Fico cited that President Zelenskyy rejected a proposal for an investigative commission to assess the pipeline's condition, with security concerns being a primary reason for this refusal. This response raises questions about the operational readiness of the Druzhba pipeline and reflects the complications arising from the ongoing conflict, especially regarding energy cooperation between neighboring countries. Additionally, the Slovak leader pointed out that there has been no recent inspection allowed by Ukraine for either Slovakia’s ambassador or an EU representative, further complicating discussions on this matter.

While acknowledging the current standstill, Fico mentioned that he is open to Zelenskyy's invitation for joint discussions on the potential repairs of the Druzhba pipeline, and has tasked his Foreign Ministry to find a suitable meeting date. This gesture speaks to a hope for future collaboration and dialogue even amidst the current disagreements, highlighting the delicate balance of regional energy politics and security concerns within the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
