The pair was returning home after attending a soccer match in Soledade when their motorcycle collided with a car around 7:35 PM. The accident took place at kilometer 204 on the route towards Campina Grande-Soledade.

José suffered severe injuries and died at the scene, while his nephew, who was riding as a passenger, was seriously injured and moved to the Emergency and Trauma Hospital in Campina Grande. As per hospital reports, the teenager's condition is stable, but he remains under intensive care. José was well-known in his community, having served as the president of the Association of Residents of Sítio Pedra d'Água dos Martins in São Vicente do Seridó, where he lived.
