The House of the Blind Association in Liepāja Burned Down in Ziemupe; They Are Calling for Help

The Blind Association's center in Ziemupe suffered a fire that destroyed a significant building used for various activities, prompting a call for assistance from the community.

The Blind Association's center in Ziemupe, Latvia, experienced a destructive fire on Friday morning that ravaged a 130 square meter building housing staff changing rooms, a carpentry workshop, and essential work tools. This unfortunate event has turned the members of the association from helpers to individuals in need of assistance. The organization's staff are currently focused on clearing the debris while they seek support from the community and local authorities.

Local authorities, specifically the South Kurzeme region's municipal office, have pledged to provide assistance with their equipment on the upcoming Wednesday and Thursday to help in the cleanup and recovery process. One of the center's rehabilitation staff, Armands Eihens, noted the critical importance of having the right machinery to support their recovery efforts, highlighting that while they have manpower available, they still require technical support to rebuild effectively.

Emergency response teams received reports of the fire early Friday, but by the time they arrived, the building was significantly involved in flames. Firefighters deployed three fire trucks and volunteers from nearby regions, including Ziemupe, Tadaiķi, Grobiņa, and Durbes, joined the effort to extinguish the fire. The rapid response was crucial, although the fire's cause remains under investigation, starting from an unexpected spark that escalated into a large fire, leading to extensive damage and prompting the association to turn to others for help in their time of need.
