Kajaanin racetrack lost operating and prize subsidies: now a rare bankruptcy threatens

The future of Kajaani's racetrack is uncertain after it lost over €200,000 in operating and prize subsidies, leading to the cancellation of several planned events.

The Kajaani racetrack in Finland is facing an uncertain future following the refusal of the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to grant operating and prize subsidies for this year, totaling more than €200,000. The subsidies were denied due to concerns regarding the racetrack's financial management for the year 2024, which did not meet the ministry's standards. As a consequence, four upcoming Hippoksen racing events scheduled for the summer have been canceled, putting a strain on the local racing scene.

Emmi Manninen, the chairman of the racetrack's board, expressed disappointment, stating that despite exploring options to continue racing in Kajaani, they have not found a viable solution. The decline in racing events at the track, especially during the summer season, has contributed to the financial issues. In an effort to mitigate the situation, two of the planned racing days have been moved to nearby tracks, while two others have been completely scrapped. This has left both the community and the management in a precarious position regarding the future of the racetrack.

The financial situation at Kajaani racetrack raises significant concerns. Without the necessary subsidies, the venue remains at risk of closure, which would not only impact the racetrack's future but also affect local economic activities linked to racing events. Manninen highlighted ongoing struggles from previous years, underlining the need for robust management and support to safeguard the racetrack's operations moving forward.
