11 million artillery shells: revealed how North Korea rescued Russia

A recent investigation reveals that North Korea has secretly supplied Russia with between 8 to 11 million artillery shells over the past two and a half years, helping bolster its artillery operations in the war against Ukraine.

An investigation recently published indicates that North Korea has been supplying Russia with a staggering amount of artillery shells, estimated between 8 to 11 million, via a clandestine sea supply network established to circumvent international sanctions. This logistical effort has allowed Moscow to maintain extensive artillery operations during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with North Korean ammunition reportedly accounting for up to half of Russia's artillery firepower in certain areas along the front lines.

The Russian cargo ships carried these munitions using a coordinated logistics network, integrating maritime and rail transportation. According to the report, since 2023, four Russian container ships—named "Angara," "Maria," "Lady R," and "Maia-1"—have made at least 112 trips to North Korea, presumably to transport these vital supplies. Despite shipping documents frequently naming Busan in South Korea as the official destination, satellite images and additional data indicated that the vessels were, in fact, docking at ports in North Korea.

Researchers reconstructed the supply routes using satellite imagery, illustrating the extent of North Korea's involvement in supporting Russia's military capabilities during the war. This development raises significant concerns about international sanctions' effectiveness and poses broader implications for geopolitical stability in the region, particularly with respect to the ongoing conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, and the role of North Korea on the global stage.
