Tax Authorities to Have Alerts to Avoid Issues in Tax Return; See What Else Leads to Audit

The Brazilian Federal Revenue will implement alerts in its tax system to help taxpayers identify potential errors before submitting their 2026 income tax returns.

Starting this year, the Brazilian Federal Revenue is introducing alerts in its tax system, MIR (Meu Imposto de Renda), designed to assist taxpayers in spotting potential errors before the submission of the 2026 income tax returns. These alerts aim to guide individuals to review information that could cause issues or result in their declarations being subjected to audits, commonly referred to as 'malha fina' in Brazil. This initiative is part of a broader effort to streamline the tax filing process and reduce complications arising from incomplete or inconsistent data.

The alerts will appear during the completion of the tax return and will flag situations where discrepancies may exist. For instance, the system will notify taxpayers when dependent expenses are reported without corresponding registered income, highlight unusually high medical expenses, or indicate when a taxpayer requests their refund through Pix using a CPF (Brazilian tax identification number) but is unable to locate a registered key linked to that CPF. This proactive approach aims to empower individuals to correct mistakes before the tax return is officially submitted, potentially leading to a smoother audit process.

This new feature represents a significant shift in the way the Federal Revenue interacts with taxpayers, moving towards a more supportive and preventative framework rather than a purely punitive one. By fostering better compliance through real-time feedback, it hopes to reduce the volume of errors and the associated administrative burden on both the tax authorities and taxpayers. In the long term, this could enhance overall tax compliance and efficiency in Brazil's tax system, benefiting the government's revenue collection efforts and taxpayer experience alike.
