Gang Uses Computer Virus to Divert Pix and Payments with Crypto and Boleto

A computer virus has evolved to divert online payments via Pix, Boleto, and cryptocurrencies, increasing the sophistication of Brazilian cybercrime.

A computer virus, known as GoPix, has recently been discovered to have advanced capabilities, allowing it to divert online payments not only through Brazil's instant payment system, Pix, but also via Boleto and cryptocurrency transactions. According to a report by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, the malware exploits legitimate browser tools to redirect web traffic, altering payment details subtly enough that victims are unaware of the fraud. The report highlights that GoPix represents one of the most advanced financial cyber threats in Brazil, making detection and prevention particularly challenging.

Since its emergence in 2023, GoPix has been disseminated through fraudulent Google Ads campaigns, targeting unsuspecting users with fake websites that operate for only a few hours at a time. These sites are meticulously designed to attract specific audiences and execute the scam before disappearing, minimizing the possibility of tracing the criminals behind the operation. Kaspersky has emphasized the severity of this situation, mentioning the difficulty in quantifying the financial damage caused by the gang due to the stealthy nature of the virus.

As cybercrime continues to evolve, the emergence of GoPix underscores the increasing sophistication of digital fraud in Brazil. With more consumers opting for digital transactions, the threat posed by such malware not only endangers individual users but also poses risks to financial institutions and online payment systems. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures, both at the individual and institutional levels, to protect against such emerging threats.
