BTG suffers about R$ 100 million in hacker attack and suspends operations with PIX
BTG Pactual experienced a hacker attack that diverted approximately R$ 100 million from the bank, leading to a suspension of its PIX operations.
On Sunday morning, a hacker attack against BTG Pactual led to the diversion of around R$ 100 million from the bank's accounts, primarily due to a flaw related to PIX operations. Although much of the stolen funds have reportedly been recovered, between R$ 20 million and R$ 40 million are still being pursued. This incident has raised concerns regarding the security of financial transactions within Brazil, particularly those made through the PIX system.
The Brazilian Central Bank confirmed that its systems were not hacked and that there was a "localized issue" within BTG Pactual itself. This revelation follows the Central Bank's identification of unusual activities in the bank's accounts, prompting BTG to preemptively suspend all PIX operations. The bank assured its customers that the attack did not breach their accounts or result in unauthorized withdrawals, thereby helping to mitigate customer concerns over their personal finances.
In light of the incident, BTG Pactual issued a statement confirming the attack and outlined the measures taken to minimize its impact. The bank also expressed its commitment to transparency by stating that it remains available to address customer inquiries. This attack raises important questions about cybersecurity in the financial sector and the robustness of existing safeguards against such intrusions in Brazil.
