No one wants the financially troubled Pyhäranta congregation as a burden - Black Peter is likely to end up with the Rauma congregation

The financially struggling Pyhäranta congregation may be merged involuntarily into the Rauma congregation due to ongoing financial difficulties and previous rejections from other nearby congregations.

The Pyhäranta congregation in Finland is facing significant financial challenges, prompting legal advisor Matleena Lahtinen to propose its merger with the Rauma congregation. The proposal, which will be presented to the Turku Cathedral Chapter, follows the congregation's inability to sustain itself independently despite having no debts. Pyhäranta has failed to make necessary investments and repairs, and has a limited staff, further exacerbating its financial woes.

Previously, both the Uusikaupunki and Laitila congregations have rejected the possibility of merging with Pyhäranta, leaving few options available. Lahtinen emphasizes that Pyhäranta cannot continue on its own, regardless of the stance taken by neighboring congregations. The proposed merger with Rauma is viewed as the best available option, as they have the resources and capacity to absorb Pyhäranta's operations and members.

The decision now lies with the Turku Cathedral Chapter and the Church Council, who will ultimately determine whether to approve the merger. This situation reflects broader issues within the Church in Finland, where small congregations struggle to remain viable in a changing demographic and economic landscape, raising important questions about community support and resource allocation within the church system.
