Regarding the possible illegal enrichment of A. Gedvilas - a pre-trial investigation: criminal liability is imminent
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the possible illegal enrichment of Lithuanian politician A. Gedvilas related to real estate transactions in Vilnius.
Lithuanian authorities have initiated a pre-trial investigation concerning allegations of illegal enrichment involving A. Gedvilas, a member of the Seimas, and certain executives of a limited liability company. The investigation will seek to determine whether any criminal actions occurred during the acquisition and transfer of real estate properties located in Vilnius. This move follows reports received regarding investigative journalism published on March 9, 2026, by the journalism center "Siena", which raised questions about the legality of Gedvilas's financial dealings.
The General Prosecutor's Office has tasked the Criminal Prosecution Department with organizing and overseeing the investigation, while the Financial Crime Investigation Service has been appointed to conduct it. The allegations are rooted in findings from the investigation by "Siena" which revealed that Gedvilas and his then-wife, Jolanta Gedvilienė, oversaw a company called "Aidma" which controlled two gas stations in the Šiauliai region. In 2015, they sold the gas stations for €645,000, only for them to be resold in 2016 at a significantly lower price to another company controlled by their son, raising suspicions of financial misconduct.
As the investigation progresses, it may have significant implications not only for Gedvilas's political career but for the broader governance and corruption landscape in Lithuania. If found guilty, he could face serious legal consequences, potentially influencing public trust in political figures and the justice system in the country. This case highlights the ongoing challenges of addressing corruption and ensuring transparency in public office in Lithuania.
