The Painful Story of Tourists Trapped in Atal Tunnel Due to Oxygen Shortage and Lack of Food and Water
Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has trapped hundreds of tourists in the Atal Tunnel, leading to severe shortages of oxygen and food.
In recent days, heavy snowfall in the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, particularly around the Atal Tunnel, has turned a fun trip for hundreds of tourists into a dire situation. Over 1,000 vehicles got stuck due to the sudden snowfall, causing long traffic jams and trapping people in their cars for hours. Many tourists reported difficulties breathing as smoke accumulated from idling engines, leading to a critical lack of oxygen, which was especially concerning for the elderly and children. Families were left without food and water as temperatures dropped, exacerbating their plight.
Accounts from these stranded tourists unveil the severity of their ordeal. Stuck in queues of vehicles both inside and outside the tunnel, some individuals described the suffocation and helplessness of waiting for hours as their children cried and their limbs grew numb from the cold. In response to deteriorating conditions, several families abandoned their vehicles, choosing to walk towards Manali instead in search of help. The police and Border Roads Organization (BRO) teams are actively engaged in rescue operations, attempting to restore road access but facing challenges due to the treacherous icy conditions.
The continuous heavy snowfall affecting the region not only highlights the vulnerability of tourists in such unpredictable weather but also raises concerns regarding emergency preparedness and infrastructure resilience in high-altitude areas. As the situation develops, it emphasizes the need for monitoring weather conditions, timely evacuations, and adequate support for potential emergencies, especially during peak travel seasons in vulnerable terrains.
