Bottling of Commercial Cylinders Halted, LPG Crisis in Tourist Cities of Himachal and Haryana
India faces a significant LPG supply crisis affecting tourism cities in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana due to disruptions in global energy supply caused by ongoing conflicts in West Asia.
The ongoing conflicts in West Asia have severely impacted global energy supply, leading to a critical shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across India, particularly in tourist hotspots and industrial regions of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. The scarcity of commercial LPG cylinders has put hotels, restaurants, and catering businesses on the brink of collapse as they rely heavily on this gas to operate. The situation has escalated into a nationwide crisis, cause for concern among various stakeholders involved in the hospitality and food services sector.
This LPG supply crisis is primarily a result of disrupted maritime traffic caused by the conflicts in the Middle East, which has led the Indian government to prioritize the distribution of domestically produced natural gas. The government has focused on allocating domestic cooking gas (LPG), CNG, and piped cooking gas supplies over commercial LPG, creating a significant shortfall for businesses that depend on market-priced LPG cylinders. The move is aimed at ensuring essential services in households but has inadvertently left many commercial entities struggling to meet their operational needs.
In response to this dire situation, Gajendra Thakur, President of the Federation of Himachal Hotels and Restaurants Association (FOHHRA), has reached out to Indiaโs Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, expressing deep concern over the ongoing shortages and the severe repercussions on the hospitality industry. This communication highlights the critical need for immediate government intervention to alleviate the LPG crisis and ensure the continuity of services for businesses in tourist regions that are vital for the local economy.
