More than 267 thousand have submitted their tax returns

Over 267,000 Icelanders have submitted their tax returns for this year, showing a slight increase compared to the previous year.

As of mid-March 2026, over 267,000 individuals in Iceland have submitted their tax returns for the income earned in 2025. This represents 74.3% of the expected submissions, which is a 2% increase compared to the same time last year. The tax authority has provided additional support through a dedicated phone service for individuals facing issues with their submissions, highlighting efforts to ensure compliance and ease the process for taxpayers.

Helga Lilja Aðalsteinsdóttir, the head of the individual department at the tax authority, noted that this year's process has been smoother than in previous years. A significant number of submissions, approximately eight thousand, were made over the weekend just before the deadline, which frequently sees a rush from taxpayers. Traditionally, most tax returns are submitted in the final two days leading up to the deadline, with nearly 70,000 returns filed on the last Thursday and Friday before the cutoff date, indicating a pattern of procrastination among filers.

The improvement in submission rates this year suggests a greater awareness and responsibility among citizens regarding their tax obligations. The timely returns not only enhance the tax authority's ability to manage revenues but also reflect a trend towards improved financial compliance among the Icelandic population. As the deadline looms, attention will remain on those who have not yet submitted to gauge overall participation and compliance rates.
