German government: The Middle East war has nothing to do with NATO

The German government clarified that the ongoing Middle East conflict involving the US and Israel's attacks on Iran is not related to NATO.

The German government is asserting that the current Middle East conflict, which has intensified due to US and Israeli military actions against Iran, is not a NATO war. According to a spokesperson for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO's primary role is to defend territory, and there is no mandate for deployment in the present circumstances. This statement comes amidst rising tensions and confusion about NATO's involvement in non-European conflicts.

Additionally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has echoed these sentiments, indicating that the plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not a NATO mission, reinforcing the stance that NATO's involvement in the Middle East remains limited. The conflict has raised significant security concerns, particularly regarding the global oil supply, as Iran has manipulated the situation to effectively close this critical transit point for oil transportation.

Furthermore, former US President Donald Trump issued a warning regarding NATO's future, suggesting that it could face dire consequences if allies do not assist in addressing the closures of the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed out that the current situation is reminiscent of the support the United States provided to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, urging European nations to respond to these urgent energy supply issues.
