Rescue by Helicopter: SOS from Ice Blocks – German Campers Rescued from the Baltic Sea
Two German campers were rescued from the frozen Baltic Sea after the ice beneath their tent collapsed.
Two German campers found themselves in a precarious situation while camping on the frozen Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden when the ice beneath their tent broke. This incident occurred early in the morning as they were staying in the Bay of Bothnia. Fortunately, they managed to escape to a stable ice surface before their equipment fell into the water. After assessing their circumstances, they were able to send out a distress call using a radio beacon and arranged the ice blocks to form the letters SOS, signaling for help.
The Finnish Border Guard confirmed that the campers' urgent call for assistance was transmitted just hours after the incident, which happened on Saturday, as reported by Bild newspaper. Their attempts to signal for help were crucial in getting the attention of rescuers in this remote area. After about five grueling hours of waiting and battling the cold, the campers were eventually rescued by a helicopter dispatched to the scene.
Although they were found in a hypothermic state, the quick response from the rescue teams ensured that they were safely brought to safety. This incident highlights not only the beauty and risks associated with winter camping but also the importance of preparation and crisis management when engaging in such activities in frigid conditions, especially in isolated areas like the Bay of Bothnia.
