Income Tax 2026: deadline starts on March 23 and extends until May 29; see who must declare
The Brazilian Federal Revenue announced that the deadline for submitting the 2026 Income Tax return will begin on March 23 and end on May 29, 2026.
The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service announced that the deadline for submitting the 2026 Income Tax declaration is set to begin on March 23, 2026, and will run until May 29, 2026. This two-month window allows taxpayers to prepare and submit their returns for the previous year's income. The announcement was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, outlining critical details for taxpayers.
Notably, changes in the exemption threshold for income tax, which applies to individuals earning up to R$ 5,000, and reductions for those earning up to R$ 7,350 will not influence the 2026 annual adjustment declaration. This is because the 2026 declaration pertains to income generated in the year 2025, which was considered a different basis year for tax purposes. These regulations highlight the nuances within Brazil's tax regulations that taxpayers must navigate annually.
Last year, 45.64 million individuals filed their Income Tax returns for 2025, constituting approximately 41% of the economically active population in Brazil. With over 110.7 million people counted in the economically active population by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the engagement of citizens in the tax filing process remains significantly higher, indicating a crucial participation in the Brazilian economy and fiscal responsibilities.
