Police Officer Indicted for Receiving 140 Million Won in Bribes to Cover Up Fraud Case
A serving police officer has been indicted for allegedly accepting 140 million won in bribes in exchange for burying a fraud case.
A police officer has been indicted under allegations that he received bribes worth 140 million won in exchange for dismissing a fraud complaint against a businessman. This case, handled by the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors’ Office, involves the officer, identified as 57-year-old G, who is accused of facilitating a deal that led to the dismissal of a case regarding a court auction investment fraud. The investigation revealed that G provided convenience for D, the complainant, who had been accused in January 2018 of defrauding investors through a scheme that promised exorbitant returns.
From April 2018 to May 2021, G allegedly received multiple cash payments from D under the guise of investment profits from the fraudulent scheme, amounting to 140 million won. Investigators discovered that no actual investments were made, and the promised returns were exaggerated, with claims of profits that defied common investment logic. The prosecutors have also indicated that during the course of their investigation, an additional amount of 45 million won in bribes was identified, and G faced further allegations under the lawyers' law for assisting a friend’s legal matters in exchange for money.
Prosecutors have asserted their commitment to tackling corruption and misconduct among public officials, indicating that measures will be taken to address such cases rigorously. The allegations outlined in the indictment are subject to court approval and finalization, underscoring the importance of accountability in law enforcement and public service.
