Former police high-ranking officer arrested for taking 40 million won by promising to solve cases using police connections
A former police officer in South Korea has been arrested for allegedly taking 40 million won in bribes in exchange for promises to assist in criminal investigations.
In South Korea, a former senior police official has been detained after being accused of accepting bribes totaling 40 million won under the pretense of helping solve criminal cases. The Suwon District Court's Anyang branch issued a warrant for the officer, identified as Mr. G, citing concerns over potential flight risk. The investigation indicates that Mr. G received these funds from an acquaintance, Mr. N, between January 2023 and January 2024, purportedly for facilitating the resolution of ongoing criminal matters.
Details of the case reveal that Mr. G and Mr. N had known each other for several years, with Mr. G allegedly using his law enforcement connections to gain the trust of Mr. N, who stated that he received multiple messages from Mr. G offering assistance with police-related issues. Reports suggest that Mr. G made various demands, including paying for golf reservations and meals, all under the guise of helping with legal matters. While Mr. G has admitted to receiving the money, he contends that these payments were for legitimate legal consultation, disputing the bribery allegations.
Investigations into the case began after authorities received tip-offs in November last year. The local police department is expected to transfer Mr. G to the prosecution soon, continuing the inquiry into possible additional victims or instances of corruption. As the investigation unfolds, officials have reported that aside from the confirmed 40 million won in bribes, there has not yet been substantial evidence pointing to other cases of solicited bribes, raising concerns about accountability within the police force and its implications for public trust in law enforcement.
