NamPower, the electricity utility in Namibia, is facing significant financial challenges due to approximately N$700 million in unpaid electricity bills that are more than 90 days overdue. This outstanding debt has remained consistent over the past six years, indicating a distressing trend that threatens the utility's operational viability. Desdemona Lubinda, head of electricity pricing at NamPower, emphasized the importance of this revenue for paying suppliers and covering essential operational costs, stressing that the current situation is unsustainable.

In light of this financial strain, NamPower has petitioned the Electricity Control Board for an approval to raise electricity tariffs by 8.4%. If granted, this increase would adjust the average tariff rate from N$2.16 to N$2.23 per kilowatt-hour.
