Botswana: Opposition Leader Warns Against Electricity Tariff Hike

The Leader of Botswana's Opposition urges caution against increasing electricity tariffs, citing negative impacts on businesses and consumers.

In a recent debate regarding the budget proposals for the 2026/27 financial year, Dumelang Saleshando, the Leader of the Opposition and Member of Parliament for Maun North, expressed serious concerns over potential increases in electricity tariffs. He warned that any hikes would worsen the economic burden on citizens and businesses that are already struggling with high overhead costs. Saleshando articulated that elevated electricity prices would lead to greater production costs for businesses, which would inevitably be transferred to consumers through higher product prices.

Despite his criticism of electricity tariff increases, Saleshando acknowledged the importance of supporting government initiatives focused on renewable energy and the local processing of minerals. He emphasized that for too long, Botswana has relied on exporting raw minerals without benefitting from job creation through local beneficiation. This acknowledgment underscores the critical need for economic strategies that not only seek to increase government revenue but also prioritize sustainable growth within the country.

Furthermore, Saleshando urged the government to take advantage of Botswana’s climate by investing in solar energy solutions, such as solar streetlights. His remarks highlight a vision for a more sustainable energy future that aligns with global trends toward renewable energy while at the same time addressing immediate economic challenges for the citizens of Botswana.
