'If you have a urinary incontinence disease, do not lead the prayer, city Qazi...'

A controversial fatwa issued in Bhopal states that individuals suffering from urinary incontinence cannot lead prayers, causing widespread backlash and accusations of conspiracy.

In the weeks leading up to Eid-ul-Fitr, Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has witnessed the emergence of a contentious debate following a fatwa from the Jamaat Ihtimam Masjid Committee's Darul Ifta. The fatwa, which was issued by Naib Mufti Syed Ahmed Khan Kashmi on March 9, 2026, states that individuals afflicted by prostate-related issues, specifically urinary incontinence, are not permitted to lead prayers (Imamat) but can still participate in them. While the fatwa does not explicitly name the city Qazi, many interpret it as being directed against him, sparking significant tension within the community.
