CPMI of INSS cancels session that would have heard president of Contag
The CPMI of INSS has canceled a session in which the president of the Confederação dos Trabalhadores Rurais (Contag) was scheduled to testify, following a decision by a Supreme Court minister.
The session of the Mixed Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry (CPMI) regarding the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), scheduled for October 16, has been canceled due to a ruling by Supreme Court minister André Mendonça. On October 15, Mendonça ruled that Aristides Veras dos Santos, president of the Confederação dos Trabalhadores Rurais, Agricultores e Agricultoras Familiares (Contag), is not obliged to attend the CPMI hearing. This decision effectively makes Santos's attendance voluntary rather than mandatory, allowing him the option to remain silent if he chooses to appear.
The canceled session was significant because it was intended to gather testimony from Santos regarding the INSS, a critical institution within Brazil's social security system that impacts farmers and rural workers, groups that Contag represents. Senator Carlos Viana, who chairs the CPMI, is expected to speak about the implications of this cancellation and any procedural steps that will follow.
By allowing Santos to sidestep mandatory testimony, this decision could lead to further scrutiny of the CPMI's power and effectiveness in investigating issues related to the INSS. It underscores the tensions between legislative inquiry bodies and the judiciary, as the court's decision marks a notable intervention in the workings of parliamentary investigations in Brazil.
