Red alert in the Middle East: how to protect my employees
Spanish companies operating in the Persian Gulf are facing challenges in protecting their employees amidst escalating conflicts in the region.
Spanish businesses in the Persian Gulf are actively monitoring ongoing conflicts and implementing measures to safeguard their employees, including repatriation efforts and collaboration with local authorities. Companies like Barceló, Meliá, Naturgy, and Indra, among others, have extensive operations in the region, which have been disrupted by recent military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
Despite the significant presence of these firms in the Middle East, the number of employees from Spain is relatively smaller compared to other regions. Acciona has reported the highest employment figures in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman, with over 5,500 workers. Meanwhile, companies like Indra provide broader employment data without specific figures for the Middle East, highlighting the varied scale of operations across different sectors, including hospitality, energy, infrastructure, and defense.
The situation underscores the importance of risk management and employee welfare for firms operating in conflict-affected areas. As tensions rise, these companies must navigate not only the logistical challenges of maintaining operations but also the ethical responsibility of ensuring their workers' safety, necessitating close cooperation with local authorities and potentially leading to strategic changes in their operational frameworks as circumstances develop.
