Nigeria: NNPP, Kwankwasiyya Accuse APC of Attack On Members
The NNPP and Kwankwasiyya Movement blame the APC for violent attacks on their members during a political event in Kano State.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement have alleged that members associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) attacked their supporters during a political gathering in Rogo Local Government Area, Kano State. This incident occurred as NNPP members were welcoming a defector from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ruwan Bago ward. Eyewitness reports and statements from both parties indicate that the confrontation turned violent, resulting in injuries and property damage.
The NNPP reported that 11 of its members were injured in the attacks, alongside the vandalism of two vehicles and the theft of several mobile phones. The party's Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Karaye, has called for an investigation by security agencies to hold those accountable for the violence against their members. This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of political gatherings in the area, particularly in the lead-up to elections, where tensions among opposing political factions often heighten.
Habibu Sale Mohammed, a spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, echoed the NNPP's claims, asserting that the violent outbreak was an unwarranted disruption of what should have been a peaceful event. Calls from both parties for a legitimate investigation underline the importance of maintaining law and order during political activities, especially during an election cycle marked by an increasingly hostile political atmosphere in Nigeria. The situation reflects broader issues related to political violence and electoral integrity, which are pressing concerns as the country approaches impending elections.
