Wike-backed PDP faction installs PDP executives in Bayelsa, Ekiti, Oyo
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike elected new party executives in multiple states after a court ruling invalidated a previous convention.
Over the weekend, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike successfully elected new party executives across several states including Bayelsa, Oyo, and Ekiti. This significant development came in the wake of an Appeal Court ruling that annulled the outcomes of a prior convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, where Tanimu Turaki was declared the national chairman. The court's decision has bolstered Wike's faction, allowing them to organize their own conventions promptly.
In preparation for the party's upcoming national convention scheduled for March 28 in Abuja, the Wike faction has been actively conducting local congresses and elections. Their efforts included conducting elections at the ward and zonal levels, culminating in state congresses held over the weekend. In Bayelsa, for example, Alabh Turnah was chosen as the state chairman through a consensus process conducted at the PDP's newly inaugurated secretariat in Yenagoa. This indicates both a strategic consolidation of power within the party and a direct challenge to rival factions.
The emergence of new state executives under Wike's faction may have far-reaching implications for the PDP, potentially shifting the power dynamics within the party as they approach the national convention. With political tensions rising and differing factions vying for control, the choices made in these elections could set the stage for future leadership battles and impact the party's overall strategy heading into subsequent elections in Nigeria.
