A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that is loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has successfully elected Abdulrahman Akinoso as the new chairman for Oyo State. The election took place during a state congress held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, which saw a notable presence of security forces to ensure the safety of the event. The congress began around 12:30 PM and all executive members were elected through a process of affirmation, highlighting a display of unity within the faction. The state congress also elected several other officers, including Abiola Olaonipekun as Secretary, Latifah Latifu as Woman Leader, and A. Adeleke as Youth Leader. A diverse committee was put together for the management of the PDP in the state, featuring various representatives. The presence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the congress underscores the importance of this election within the broader political landscape of Nigeria and its adherence to democratic processes. In his inaugural remarks, Abdulrahman Akinoso emphasized that the partyβs immediate focus would be on preparing for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This focus indicates a strategic vision for the faction as it aims to consolidate power and strengthen its presence in the state ahead of significant electoral contests, suggesting that the PDP is actively evolving in response to Nigeria's dynamic political climate and internal party divisions.
