Lagos records 173 emergencies in two months – LASEMA

Lagos State recorded 173 emergency incidents between January and February 2026, primarily due to road traffic accidents.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported that a total of 173 emergency incidents were recorded in Lagos between January and February 2026. The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, released a statement outlining the operational activities of the agency during this period, indicating that January saw 93 incidents while February accounted for 80 incidents.

Notably, road traffic accidents were the predominant cause of emergencies, with 56 such incidents reported. Oke-Osanyintolu highlighted that the majority of these accidents involved vehicle crashes, specifically categorizing 53 incidents as assorted vehicle crashes and three as vehicles catching fire. This alarming statistic underscores the pressing concern of road safety within the state, prompting discussions about the necessity for improved traffic management and safety measures.

Additional incidents involved trucks and tankers, which accounted for 35 cases, including accidents, breakdowns, fire outbreaks, and fallen containers. The data suggests a growing need for more robust emergency response systems and preventive measures to ensure that recorded incidents do not continue to escalate, emphasizing LASEMA's crucial role in managing emergencies throughout Lagos State.
