Arewa community protests insecurity in Edo with sit-at-home
The Arewa Community in Edo State has initiated a sit-at-home protest to highlight their concerns over insecurity and perceived persecution.
The Arewa Community in Auchi, located in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, has launched a sit-at-home protest from Friday onward to address the ongoing insecurity that has been impacting their members. Community leader Chief Bawa Mohammed stated that the protest is aimed at raising awareness among authorities regarding the plight of Northern Nigerians residing in the region. The community feels they are being unfairly targeted due to the actions of a small number of criminals, which has perpetuated a narrative of suspicion against them.
Chief Mohammed emphasized that the majority of individuals from the North living in Auchi are law-abiding citizens who seek better opportunities and are negatively affected by the blanket perceptions of insecurity. He pointed out that criminal activities tend to be committed by a minority and that the community is committed to vigilance and cooperation to ensure that criminals do not operate freely among them. The sit-at-home protest reflects a broader call for understanding and support from authorities towards the community's situation and experiences of fear and persecution.
By organizing the protest, the Arewa Community not only seeks to advocate for their rights and safety but also stresses the need for a more responsible narrative surrounding crime and community identity. The protest serves as a significant reminder of the challenges faced by minority communities in Nigeria amidst broader security concerns, and it highlights the importance of addressing these issues with compassion and understanding rather than prejudice.
