Suwa secures Asia Games spot in race walking; late coach regarded as 'guardian deity'

In a historic performance at the Japan Athletics Championships, Motofumi Suwa confirmed his place in the Asian Games following his victory in the men's race walking category.

Motofumi Suwa emerged victorious in the men's race walking event at the Japan Athletics Championships, completing the race in a time of 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 21 seconds. His win secured him a spot in the upcoming Asia Games to be held in Nagoya this autumn. The championships, taking place at the public course in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, marked the first time race walking was conducted over the marathon distance in Japan. Suwa's win also came with poignant memories as he wore a mourning armband in honor of his late coach, Takayuki Uchida, who passed away last December at the age of 80. Uchida's influence on Suwa's training and technique was significant, and Suwa credited him as his 'guardian deity' during the race.
