Tokyo Marathon: Suguru Osako Finishes 12th as Top Japanese Runner; Kengo Suzuki Takes 13th
Suguru Osako finished 12th and was the top Japanese runner in the Tokyo Marathon, while Kengo Suzuki placed 13th.
The Tokyo Marathon, held on March 1st, saw Japanese record holder Suguru Osako from the Running Club Lienin finishing as the top Japanese competitor in 12th place with a time of 2 hours 5 minutes and 59 seconds. Meanwhile, former record holder Kengo Suzuki from the Yokohama Athletic Association finished just behind him in 13th place with a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 9 seconds. The marathon was won by Ethiopia's Tadese Takele, who clocked in at an impressive 2 hours 3 minutes and 37 seconds.
In a thrilling race, the two Japanese elite runners, Osako and Suzuki, engaged in a fierce competition during the final stages. Around the 36-kilometer mark, Osako made a decisive move within the lead group, prompting Suzuki to keep pace. However, it was at around the 40-kilometer mark that Suzuki attempted to break away, only for Osako to catch up again. Ultimately, Osako surged ahead at approximately 41 kilometers, solidifying his position as the leading Japanese runner.
This marathon was particularly significant for Osako as it marked his first race since setting a new Japanese record at the Valencia Marathon in December 2022, where he recorded a time of 2 hours 4 minutes and 55 seconds. In a post-race interview, Osako expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating that he felt mentally prepared after three months since his last competitive outing. Suzuki acknowledged Osako's professionalism and noted the gap in their performance, emphasizing the tough competition.
