The only city in SP to receive a chikungunya vaccine, Mirassol expands immunization for residents of the region
Mirassol, the only city in São Paulo state to receive the chikungunya vaccine, has extended its vaccination program to neighboring municipalities, with a goal to immunize 37,500 people.
Mirassol, a city in São Paulo, Brazil, has recently expanded its vaccination campaign against chikungunya to residents of neighboring municipalities, becoming the sole city in the state to receive the vaccine through a pilot project by the Ministry of Health. This initiative aims to reach a target of immunizing 37,500 individuals. As of last Friday, only 3,696 residents have been vaccinated, indicating a need for increased awareness and participation in the campaign.
The Municipal Health Department of Mirassol has announced that all Basic Health Units (UBSs) in the city will remain open throughout the week, providing ample opportunity for eligible individuals to receive the vaccine. The vaccination program is open to anyone aged 18 to 59 who resides in the region, provided they present a photo ID and their vaccination card. This approach not only addresses local public health needs but also fosters community engagement in disease prevention efforts.
The development of the chikungunya vaccine has been spearheaded by the Butantan Institute, supported by collaborations with the Funfarme and the Medical School of São José do Rio Preto. The pilot project not only signifies a significant step in combating chikungunya in the region but also serves as a model for future public health initiatives aimed at controlling mosquito-borne diseases in Brazil.
