Why Al-Khiyam May Become the 'Mother of Battles' in Southern Lebanon?

Al-Khiyam, a town in Southern Lebanon, is gaining attention amid escalating Israeli military buildup, as analysts speculate it could become the focal point for the next ground battle due to its strategic geographical position.

Al-Khiyam, a small town in Southern Lebanon, is currently under the spotlight as tensions rise with increased military presence from Israel along the border. Analysts, particularly retired military expert Baha Halal, are suggesting that the town's geographical and military importance could turn it into the center of a future conflict. Al-Khiyam is considered a 'geographical key' for the border region as it sits close to the border and at a height that allows for effective surveillance and command over the surrounding areas.

According to Halal, controlling Al-Khiyam could enable dominance over the Marjeyoun plain and the Hasbani Valley, which leads to the Litani River. The town also serves as a critical transit route that links Marjeyoun to Nabatieh and Hasbaiya, thus enhancing its operational significance. This strategic positioning means that the area could be pivotal for military operations, should a conflict erupt, giving any controlling force considerable advantage in monitoring and controlling the movements in the region.

Additionally, reports indicate that Israeli fighter jets have already launched airstrikes on Al-Khiyam, further escalating the situation. Halal points out that capturing Al-Khiyam might allow for establishing a buffer zone similar to what existed before the year 2000, potentially along the Marjeyoun plain or even reaching the Litani River. This would transform the town into vital military landing points and surveillance platforms for artillery and drones, adding another layer to the complexity of the ongoing conflict in the area.
