Odermatt received the crystal globe without arriving on the slope, Shiffrin victorious again
Marco Odermatt secured the crystal globe in giant slalom without competing in the postponed event in Courchevel, while Mikaela Shiffrin triumphed in the women's slalom.
The scheduled giant slalom event for men in Courchevel was canceled due to heavy snowfall, which ultimately led to Marco Odermatt earning the crystal globe for the fourth consecutive year. The competition was postponed from Saturday to Sunday, but the significant snowfall overnight made the course unmanageable despite the organizers' efforts to clear it. FIS competition director Markus Waldner commented on the extreme weather conditions that forced the cancellation of the event.
Prior to the event in Courchevel, Odermatt had a comfortable 158-point lead over his nearest rival, Vincent Kriechmayr. This cancellation means that Odermatt can officially celebrate his fourth title in giant slalom without having to compete in the final race, as he had already amassed enough points from previous events. In addition to the giant slalom globe, Odermatt also secured the overall World Cup title and a small globe for the super-G event over the weekend.
On the women's side, Mikaela Shiffrin continued her strong performance by winning the slalom event held in Are on the same Sunday. This victory contributes to her impressive tally of wins in the World Cup, solidifying her status as one of the most successful alpine skiers in the sportβs history. The outcomes of these events highlight the significance of consistency and skill in achieving victory across the challenging winter sports calendar, particularly in the face of unpredictable weather.
