VMVT: Farmers will be able to register and monitor livestock vaccination data
Farmers in Lithuania will soon have the ability to register and track vaccination data for livestock, starting with Bluetongue disease vaccinations.
The Lithuanian Agriculture Data Center has developed a new module that allows farmers to register vaccinations for livestock against infectious diseases. This module initially focuses on the registration of vaccination against Bluetongue disease and is set for future expansion to include other infectious diseases and additional animal species. This step is part of a broader effort to digitize livestock management and vaccination tracking, which until now has largely depended on paper documentation.
Gintarė Jatkevičienė, an advisor for VMVT, emphasized the importance of vaccination data following animals as they are moved between locations or exported from the country. The new system aims to facilitate this process by providing a reliable, digital solution that supports veterinarians, farming entities, and slaughterhouses in maintaining accurate records of vaccinations. This modernization of the data handling process is seen as a critical preventive measure against the spread of animal diseases that can impact food supply and livestock health.
The implementation of this system comes at a time of financial pressure on farmers in Lithuania, particularly due to falling milk prices. By improving vaccination tracking and management, the initiative not only aims to bolster animal health but also seeks to mitigate excess livestock production, ultimately benefiting the agricultural industry as a whole. Stakeholders, including public veterinary services and private veterinarians, are expected to actively engage with this new digital infrastructure, marking a significant advancement in animal husbandry practices in the country.
