Excision in the Coalition / Danko Criticizes Fico for Undermining SNS. He Also Wants to Unite with Him to Create a "Big Fidesz"

Andrej Danko criticizes Prime Minister Robert Fico over the dismantling of the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers, while expressing a desire to ally with him to form a more unified political bloc.

Andrej Danko, the head of the Slovak National Party (SNS), publicly criticized Prime Minister Robert Fico for the recent decision to abolish the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers, claiming that someone must be held accountable for this move. Danko expressed concern that this decision could lead to loss of EU funds, citing it as shameful that the government would choose to eliminate a crucial office designed to safeguard whistleblowers. He voiced these concerns during a recent episode of the political show 'In Politics' on TA3 television.

The law terminating this Office was passed by the parliamentary majority led by Fico’s coalition on December 12. This decision came despite a veto from President Peter Pellegrini, who had returned the law to parliament just a day earlier after it was approved by the coalition on December 9, which coincided with the International Anti-Corruption Day. The Constitutional Court has since suspended the implementation of the law before Christmas, and Fico remarked that the coalition had agreed to proceed with its abolition, arguing that it complicates their operations.

Danko's comments indicate a significant discontentment within the coalition about their legislative choices, and he confirmed that the parliament would revisit the issue in its March session. His emphasis on the unnecessary nature of the law underscores a deeper rift within the coalition, coupled with his hope to solidify forces with Fico into a more formidable political entity like the 'Big Fidesz'. This situation reflects broader tensions in Slovak politics concerning governance and accountability as the coalition grapples with its public image and efficacy.
