Probe ₦5.9bn NNPC rebranding cost, SERAP urges Tinubu
SERAP has called for an investigation into the ₦5.9 billion spent on the rebranding of NNPC to NNPC Limited.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu initiate an investigation into an alleged ₦5.9 billion expenditure on the rebranding of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) into the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. In a letter dated March 14, 2026, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, urged the president to direct the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and relevant anti-corruption agencies to scrutinize this significant spending. The organization emphasized the necessity for transparency surrounding the financial details of this rebranding process.
The call for investigation arises amidst ongoing concerns about mismanagement of public funds in Nigeria, where issues of accountability and transparency are paramount for effective governance. SERAP highlighted that the amount involved is substantial and requires thorough examination to ensure that the taxpayers' money has not been exploited or misused. They stressed the importance of public trust in governmental financial decisions, particularly regarding such a large sum which could have far-reaching implications for national development.
This request not only highlights the specific case of NNPC's rebranding costs but also reflects broader societal demands for ethical governance practices. By pushing for an inquiry, SERAP aims to empower citizens and enhance public oversight over governmental expenditures. Moreover, a comprehensive investigation could potentially strengthen anti-corruption measures in Nigeria, reinforcing the need for integrity in the management of public resources.
