Chairman of «Daugavas vanagu»: The story of the Legion is still untold
Aivars Sinka discusses the ways in which the legacy of the Legion will be commemorated in Latvia and the diaspora.
Aivars Sinka, the chairman of the organization "Daugavas vanagi," spoke about the upcoming commemorative events for the Legion in Latvia and abroad. He noted that while activities will commence in Australia, the main event in Latvia will involve a service at St. John's Church, followed by a procession to the Freedom Monument and then to Lestene. Sinka emphasized the importance of engaging the youth in these commemorations and announced a new initiative titled "The Gates of Time Are Open" to be held at the Latvian Culture College in Riga.
Sinka also addressed the growing understanding among the public regarding the Legion's history and purpose. He explained that there had been a period, particularly in the early 2000s, when discussion of the Legion and its significance had diminished, largely due to political divides. However, he is optimistic that awareness is slowly increasing, which could help foster a more nuanced understanding of this historical narrative.
The conversation reflects on the complex legacy of the Legion in Latvian history and the challenges in communicating its significance to contemporary society. As events unfold both in Latvia and the diaspora, there is a potential for enhanced discourse that can contribute to a collective understanding of this part of Latvian heritage.
