An unhygienic practice related to a trendy hobby: 'I do not recommend it to anyone'
A health expert warns about the unhygienic conditions of yoga and pilates mats if not cleaned properly after use.
In Finland, yoga and pilates have become popular fitness practices, often emphasized by influencers on social media. Many people practice these activities at home with just a yoga mat as their main equipment. This increase in practice also leads to a rise in hygiene concerns regarding these mats, which many people may overlook despite their frequent use.
Research by Minna Kuusela, the head of research at the Work Efficiency Institute, highlights that while mats used for stretching may not need cleaning after every session, those used for more intense, sweaty workouts should be cleaned after each use to avoid becoming unhygienic. If not maintained properly, these mats can harbor bacteria due to sweat and other residues, leading to unattractive and potentially harmful conditions.
With more households in Finland acquiring their mats for home workouts, it is crucial for users to recognize the importance of cleaning. Ignoring this maintenance can lead to discomfort and health risks, as dirty mats can become breeding grounds for bacteria, which detracts from the health benefits these fitness practices aim to provide.
