Ecuador adds 13 deaths and 1,805 adverse events from rains in what has been the year 2026

Ecuador has reported 13 deaths related to heavy rainfall during the current winter season, with over 54,000 people affected.

Ecuador is currently grappling with severe weather conditions as the number of fatalities from heavy rains has reached 13 since the start of the winter season in 2026. The deaths have been confirmed in several provinces, including Guayas, Los Ríos, Chimborazo, and others, as local authorities work to assess the impact of the ongoing crisis. In addition to the fatalities, the level of disruption continues to rise, with approximately 54,797 individuals reported as affected by the extreme weather conditions thus far.

In particular, the province of Los Ríos has seen significant flooding, with Babahoyo experiencing knee-deep water in various neighborhoods. Public infrastructure has also suffered damage as flooding infiltrated property and homes, illustrating the local government's struggle to address the immediate needs of residents. The ongoing situation has prompted the Secretariat for Risk Management to deploy humanitarian aid brigades to assist communities in distress.

From January 1, 2026, to the present, there have been 1,805 recorded adverse events related to rainfall across 24 provinces, which have impacted 191 cantons and 606 parishes. The large number of adverse weather incidents underscores the urgent need for systemic measures to manage the risks associated with such extreme climatic events in Ecuador, as authorities continue to battle the ongoing crisis and provide necessary support to those affected.
