UNILORIN, NNPCL partner on research centre, professorial chair
The University of Ilorin and NNPCL have formed a partnership to establish a research centre and professorial chair to enhance engineering and technology education in West Africa.
The University of Ilorin has entered into a collaborative agreement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to set up a joint strategic committee aimed at improving research and education in engineering and technology. This partnership was announced by the Director of Corporate Affairs at the university, Kunle Akogun, following a meeting held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, led the university's delegation, while the NNPCL's team was led by its Managing Director and CEO, Bashir Bayo Ojulari.
During the discussions, both parties focused on the creation of a Centre of Excellence that will specialize in practical engineering and technology-driven research. This centre is envisioned to become the first of its kind in West Africa, promising to significantly contribute to the region's development in these crucial fields. By establishing such a centre, the University of Ilorin and NNPCL aim to enhance educational opportunities and foster innovation in engineering disciplines, which is increasingly crucial for the economic growth of Nigeria and the larger West African region.
This partnership not only underscores the importance of collaboration between academic and industry sectors but also reflects a growing trend in Nigeria to invest in advanced educational facilities that align with the needs of the job market. As the country continues to develop its technological capabilities, initiatives like this one are essential for building a skilled workforce and sustaining economic progress, positioning Nigeria as a leader in education and technology in the region.
