The Czech Lion for Best Feature Film was awarded to 'Caravan', a road movie directed by Zuzana Kirchnerová that explores the lives of people with mental disabilities and autism. This film, which also clinched two awards from its eleven nominations, highlights themes of freedom, various forms of love, and the desire to truly live. Notably, Juliána Brutovská won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film, further demonstrating the film’s strong cast and production values.
Producer Dagmar Sedláčková expressed that while the film might not change the world, it has significant power to foster understanding within it, urging the public to support the project. She reflected on the journey of creating 'Caravan', highlighting that despite a challenging start, the collaborative effort of the cast and crew ultimately led to a successful and heartfelt project. Sedláčková's gratitude also extended to Kirchnerová for her bravery in tackling such important topics through film.
'Caravan', which marks Kirchnerová's feature debut, represented the Czech Republic at the Cannes Film Festival last year in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section, known for showcasing promising filmmakers and arthouse cinema. The film features a young boy with a mental disability as one of its main characters, emphasizing its commitment to portraying underrepresented narratives and perspectives.
