Samu doctor who saved choking baby reports relief upon hearing crying: 'best sound we've heard all day'
A doctor from the Urgent Mobile Care Service in Brazil recounts the emotional moment she saved a one-month-old baby from choking and the relief of hearing him cry again.
Doctor Tânia Furtado, part of the Urgent Mobile Care Service (Samu), shared her relief after successfully rescuing a baby named Theo who was choking on breast milk. The incident took place in Teresina, Brazil, where Tânia and her team were called for help after finishing another emergency and were waiting for mechanics to fix their ambulance. When they arrived, the baby was already unconscious and in desperate need of immediate attention.
Tânia and her colleagues, including nursing technician Tayane Castro, driver Shilk Shigeaki, and nurse Marlos Cruz, quickly took action. Tânia performed the airway obstruction maneuver for approximately 40 seconds, during which she feared for the baby's life but remained focused on the task. The culmination of their efforts was met with an overwhelming sense of relief when they eventually heard Theo cry, which Tânia described as "the best sound we've heard all day."
This incident underscores the critical nature of emergency services and the profound emotional toll on healthcare providers in high-pressure situations. The successful intervention emphasizes the importance of rapid response and teamwork in saving lives, highlighting not only the skill of the medical team but also the impact of their work in the community.
