Bishop emptied the church's coffers and went to a brothel – The Pope fired him
Bishop Emanuel Shaleta of the Chaldean Catholic Church in San Diego has been dismissed following serious allegations of embezzlement and visits to a Mexican brothel.
Emanuel Shaleta, the 69-year-old bishop of the Chaldean Catholic Church in San Diego, has been terminated from his position after facing grave accusations of embezzling church funds and visiting a brothel in Mexico. The Pope, Leo XIV, approved Shaleta's resignation on the same day he was released from custody after posting bail of $125,000. The allegations against Shaleta include eight counts of embezzlement, eight counts of money laundering, and one count of a serious financial crime, resulting in a significant scandal for the church.
Shaleta was arrested on March 6 at the San Diego International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Germany with over $9,000 in cash. His arrest was a culmination of an investigation that began when authorities received tips regarding his alleged crimes in August 2025. The San Diego County sheriff's office reported that at least $427,000 had gone missing from church funds, with estimates suggesting that the total could rise to nearly one million dollars.
The implications of this case extend beyond Shaleta's personal misconduct, as it raises profound concerns about financial management within religious institutions. This scandal not only undermines the trust of the congregation but also reflects broader issues of accountability and transparency that are critical in maintaining the integrity of the church's mission to serve its community.
