Bishop Emanuel Shaleta, the head of Saint Peter’s Chaldean Church in San Diego, is embroiled in a scandal that has led to him facing over a dozen felony charges. The allegations include stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the church and engaging in illicit activities, including visits to Mexican brothels. During a recent court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including eight counts of embezzlement and eight counts of money laundering, as well as one count of aggravated white collar crime enhancement. Shaleta was apprehended by authorities while attempting to leave the country, which raises questions about whether he intended to flee amid the serious allegations against him.
