Antonis Kourtis, a revered journalist from Thessaloniki, has passed away at the age of 92. He was widely recognized not only for his contributions to the field of journalism but also for his role as a government spokesperson during Andreas Papandreouβs premiership and as the president of the Thessaloniki International Fair. His death marks the end of an era in Greek journalism, where he made significant impacts through his writing and leadership.
Born in February 1934 in Larissa, Kourtis experienced challenging childhood years during the German occupation of Greece, where his father was arrested and sent to prison. He eventually grew up in Thessaloniki, where he completed his law studies at the Aristotle University. Before starting his journalism career, Kourtis worked as a lawyer, but it was his entry into journalism in 1961 that would define his legacy.
Kourtis began his journalism career at newspapers such as "Eleftheros Laos" and "Drasi." He later became the editor of the newspaper "Thessaloniki," where he significantly increased its readership and reputation during his tenure. His work not only set high standards for quality journalism in Greece but also shaped public discourse in the country, leaving an indelible mark on both the media landscape and society at large.
