Renowned journalist George Votsis has died

George Votsis, a prominent figure in Greek journalism post-dictatorship, has passed away at the age of 88.

George Votsis, a distinguished journalist known for his significant contributions to the Greek media landscape following the fall of the military junta, has died at the age of 88. His death was announced by his friend and colleague Yiannis Koutzouradis. Votsis was born in Labdani, Ioannina, and raised in Piraeus, where he began his journalism career shortly after graduating from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1957 at the young age of 19.

During the dictatorship of the colonels in Greece, Votsis was an active member of the resistance organization 'Patriotic Front' (PAM) and was sentenced in absentia to five years in prison for his opposition to the regime. He managed to escape to London before being apprehended. After the restoration of democracy in Greece, he became well-known as the political editor and columnist for the newspaper 'Eleftherotypia' and was influential in shaping public discourse, particularly during critical moments in Greek history.

His legacy includes notable written works, including an open letter to the members of the radical group November 17, following the assassination of industrialist Alexandros Athanasiadis Bodossaki on March 1, 1988, a piece that underscored his commitment to justice and accountability. Votsis's impact on journalism and public life in Greece marks him as a significant figure whose work contributed to the democratic dialogue in the country after years of repression.
